The Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) Project

The Distinguished Flying Cross Project

What is the Distinguished Flying Cross?

The Distinguished Flying Cross is a military decoration awarded to any officer or enlisted member of the United States Armed Forces who distinguishes himself or herself in support of operations by "heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial flight, subsequent to November 11, 1918."

How did this project develop?

It started with an idea.  This idea was created and further developed based upon making the correct wood selection in order to properly showcase the colors and figuring of the Distinguished Flying Cross medal.

A decision was made selecting spalted maple as the wood selection keeping the natural color of white, and making color alterations for the red and blue.  The natural figuring of the spalted maple under all three colors, once finished would be spectacular!  This natural beauty was my expectation even prior to starting the project.

My pen making methodology is based upon having a vision of expecting great things, providing and producing great results.  Even prior to cutting the first piece of wood, as with any project I establish the intended results.  I knew this project would be amazing!  Fortunately, I proved myself right, and had spectacular results.  All of the recipients loved them!

Coupled with a set of gold magnetic hardware, this combination delivered!

Of course every custom Derringer wooden pen needs a case.  The case selection for the DFC project was brown, showcasing the natural figuring of the spalted maple in red, white, and blue specific to the DFC medal configuration.

Consistent with DFC recipients (ie. elite membership), I only made four of these special pens - whereby allowing the recipients another opportunity to become a member of yet another elite few.

How can you help support this effort?

There is a non-profit organization specific to honoring the men and women who receive this medal of achievement, it is called The Distinguished Flying Cross Society.  The Distinguished Flying Cross Society is based out of San Diego, and can be found online at www.dfcsociety.org.  The Distinguished Flying Cross Society is a 501 (c) 19 nonprofit war veterans organization.  Donate here today!

Their mission:

The Distinguished Flying Cross Society (DFCS) exists to honor those men and women who have demonstrated their heroism or extraordinary achievements in difficult situations in aerial flight that resulted in the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross.  As an organization, the DFCS membership represents not only the continuum of time, from 1926 to the present, but a diversity of services, ethnicity, rank and gender.  Our membership primarily hails from the United States Army, United States Navy, United States Marine Corps, United States Air Force and the United States Coast Guard along with a few civilian aviation pioneers who are also included.

The Society was founded on fraternity and fellowship among military fliers.  We seek to preserve the rich heritage and historical narratives of those who are recipients of the DFC and to educate the general public, especially the youth of America, on the values of courage, patriotism and character; those characteristics upon which America was founded.  In doing, so we want to elevate the awareness of the award itself and to demonstrate to the public that, based on those principles, a cross section of ordinary Americans can and have accomplished extraordinary things in extremely difficult conditions.
